For actress
Chandini Chowdary,
Ugadi is all about family, traditions, and good food. Known for
Colour Photo (2020) and
Gaami (2024), she fondly recalls childhood memories and the significance of the festival in her life. In an exclusive chat with
Hyderabad Times, she shares her love for the traditions that make Ugadi special.
“Ugadi is all about family—and, of course, Ugadi pachadi. I used to hate it as a kid because of its bitterness, but now I love it. I guess we learn to embrace life’s bitterness as we grow older”

Her celebrations begin with a traditional puja led by elders, followed by dressing in ethnic wear and indulging in a feast. “
Pulihora is my favourite, especially tamarind
pulihora. I absolutely love cooking South Indian food,” she shares. For Chandini, Ugadi is a time to celebrate togetherness and the joy of shared traditions.
‘We always look forward to our festive gatherings’Ugadi at Chandini’s home is a family tradition, much like in any traditional Telugu household. “Our entire family gathers either at my place or my
pedamma’s (aunt’s) house, including cousins and relatives. We start with Ugadi
pachadi, have lunch together, and then play family games — it’s something we always look forward to. I especially love dumb charades!”
However, this year, the celebrations feel different. “Last year, we lost my cousin, and we will deeply miss him. He was an integral part of our festivities, so this Ugadi will carry a sense of loss. Being the only child and the youngest in the family, I have always been pampered by everyone.”

‘I hope life is kinder to me this year’Despite professional success, the past year was personally challenging for the actress. “I had three film releases, two of which did well, but personally, it wasn’t a great year. I suffered an ACL tear on set, which I’m still recovering from. It led to complications that restricted my lifestyle and created a mental block, limiting my work opportunities.”
With Ugadi marking a new beginning, Chandini has one wish — for happiness and healing. “I hope my family finds healing, and I recover both physically and mentally. More than anything, I just want to be happy. I hope this year is kinder to me (
smiles).”
